First nephropathology workshop in India

Anila Abraham, from the Center for Renal and Urological Pathology, along with Prof. Edwin Fernando, Head of Nephrology at Stanley Medical College and Prof. N Gopalakrishnan, Head of Nephrology at Madras Medical College, in Chennai, India organized an ISN endorsed nephropathology workshop on January 25, 2014. It was the first of its kind in the region.

“Nephropathology is still at its infancy in our country,” says Abraham. There are very few trained nephropathologists to support the large number of well qualified nephrologists. This workshop created an interest in nephropathology and highlighted the latest developments in the field.

Dr Abraham did her ISN fellowship in 2010. He host mentor Dr Patrick Walker, Director of Nephropathy at Little Rock, Arkansas (USA) and her home mentor Dr Mohan Rajapurkar, Director of Post Graduate Studies and Research at Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital, Nadiad, Gujarat (India) were the course directors.

The participants worked on clinical cases with histopathological images and had to come up with a diagnosis. After the hands on session, each case was discussed with Dr Walker. The topics covered in these interactive sessions included glomerular diseases, tubulointerstitial diseases and transplantation pathology. There were also lectures on renal pathology from the nephrologist’s perspective, histotechniques in renal biopsies and transplantation pathology.

The feedback from this first workshop was overall positive and there is hope for another in the future. The initiative is part of ISN’s many activities and program taking place in India.
