Course gives guidance on vascular access and transplantation

In March, an ISN Continuing Medical Education (CME) course took place Gurgaon India. It was held thanks to a valuable Sister Renal Center partnership.

Following this successful two-day course, several documents will be available to provide guidance on building vascular access and transplant services in new nephrology units in India.

The first day covered interactive ward rounds at the Medicity Hospital, with several cases presented by nephrology fellows. These included, a kidney transplant patient with urinary tract infection, malnutrition and acute kidney injury (AKI). Urinary tract infections particularly with multi-resistant gram negative bacteria were a major problem. The team had gained experience in treating these infections. These infections often required prolonged antibiotics to avoid recurrence.

This was followed by a seminar on kidney transplantation and vascular access in incident and prevalent dialysis populations. The team also visited the dialysis unit. The coordinators  explained the method of establishing relationship between donor and recipient which was extensive and very well designed. The team visited the ITU setting for post operative management for Transplant patients. In the evening the visiting and host teams met for dinner and discussed issues around service improvement.

Overall, it was a very interactive CME. Delegates were from the Delhi region as well as other cities in India. The audience participation in interactive sessions, case based discussions and workshops were the highlights. The visiting team presented the UK experience on topics such as: hemodialysis fistulae, kidney transplant protocol biopsy, tacrolimus concentration monitoring and cardiovascular work up pre kidney transplantation. The host team discussed immune work up pre-transplantation, vascular access pathway and surgical contribution by the vascular surgeons.
