What has been the impact of your ISN Clinical Research Project?

Our team, the Southeast Asia Acute Kidney Injury (SEA-AKI) study group, recently conducted prospective observational study in Thailand, Laos, and Indonesia supported by the ISN clinical research program. With this support, we have established and published  AKI epidemiology in Thailand, Laos, and Indonesia in the leading Nephrology journals. To our knowledge, SEA-AKI cohort is the first and the largest prospective AKI epidemiologic study in Southeast Asia. This study has raised the public concern in our community that AKI is common and has great impact on not only short-term patient outcome but also long-term outcome. We investigated for the first time the incidence and risk factors of AKI during ICU stay in ASEAN patients.

What does the future look like?

The finding will provide the future plan to care AKI survivors to reduce the new CKD and CKD progression such as post AKI clinics. With these, we strongly believe our study has opened the new insight to Nephrology community especially in resource limited settings.
