Title of the project:

Prediction equation for estimation of glomerular filtration rate in Indian population

Topics:

Chronic Kidney Disease, Glomerular Filtration Rate

Short description of the project or abstract:

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been identified as one of the thrust areas for the next 5 years. So far, CKD has largely remained neglected because of poor health care resources, decreased awareness among health care professionals and lack of proper diagnostic facilities. In fact, the resources for treatment are even much more compromised. There is a need to correctly identify CKD at an earlier stage in high risk population so that measures to delay its progression can be instituted as early as possible. Estimating GFR (Glomerular Filtration Rate) is the first step towards making a diagnosis of CKD. Unfortunately, lack of a valid GFR estimating equation in Indian population is a major stumbling block in making a diagnosis of CKD at early stages. Therefore, the diagnosis is often made late and the patients are incorrectly classified. We plan to develop a GFR estimating equation for Indian patients based on their socio-demographic and biochemical characteristics. We plan to do it according to the latest recommended standards for development of such equations. The new Indian equation will be derived by using a multiple linear regression model and multiple variables in relation to measured GFR by urinary inulin clearance.

Learning or Research objectives:

To derive prediction equation for estimation of glomerular filtration rate in Indian population
