ISN Pioneer Awards 2015: Maya Ignatova picks up the prize for Russia & CIS
ISN is happy to announce that Professor Maya Ignatova (Russia) received an ISN Pioneer Award at the World Kidney Day meeting in Moscow on March 20, 2015. This prize rewards doctors on a regional level who have carried out extraordinary efforts to advance nephrology in a specific country or region.
Throughout her career as a pediatric nephrologist, Maya Ignatova dedicated her time and energy to promoting pediatric nephrology in Russia. She made enormous efforts to organize postgraduate teaching courses and national meetings across Russia.
Professor Ignatova is the former Head of the Inherited and Acquired Kidney Diseases Division at the Research Institute of Clinical Pediatrics, Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University, Moscow.
Her dedication and innovative approach were crucial to the progress of pediatric nephrology in Russia. She helped establish the European Society of Pediatric Nephrology (ESPN) in 1967 and the International Pediatric Nephrology Association (IPNA) in 1972. Later on, she was elected as an ESPN and IPNA Member of Council for Russia and became Honorary Member of ESPN (2006) and IPNA (2007).
In 1996, Ignatova established the Russian Association of Pediatric Nephrology (RAPN) and joined forces with the Russian Dialysis Society of the journal Nephrology and Dialysis. The main purpose of the RAPN is to advance medical science by promoting basic and clinical research in the field of pediatric nephrology to improve early diagnostics, treatment and prevention of kidney diseases in children in Russia. RAPN now includes more than 450 members from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, and Uzbekistan.
Maya Ignatova has published more than 15 books on pediatric nephrology in Russia including “Renal diseases in children”, “Hereditary and congenital nephropathy in children”, “Pediatric nephrology”, “Chronic renal insufficiency”, “Immunosupressive drugs in nephrotic syndrome in children” and more. She is one of the co-authors of the ESPN Handbook Pediatric Nephrology.
