Madras Medical Devices donates PD catheters to Saving Young Lives program in Africa
During the World Congress of Nephrology, 100 cuffed peritoneal dialysis catheters were donated to the Saving Young Lives program in Africa. Half of these were custom-made pediatric peritoneal dialysis catheters, and they were used at the Clinical Skills training program that took place at Red Cross Hospital in Cape Town just before the congress.
Nephrologists from across Africa really appreciated this generous gesture from Madras Medical Devices and the Tanker Foundation in Chennai, India,. The catheters were handed over to the Saving Young Lives Steering Committee at a formal ceremony at the Cape Town Convention Center on March 16, 2015. Until recently, catheters in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa were imported from the United States or Europe, meaning costs were high. Madras Medical Devices was established by Georgi Abraham and his students to manufacture high quality peritoneal dialysis catheters locally at a much cheaper price.
