  • Understand the management of kidney disease and how my interpretation affects this
  • Gain communication skills relaying important findings

Profile Description and Training plan:

The training in renal pathology started in September 2015 at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. The institution receives about 800 biopsies per year that include a good mix of both native and transplant from outreach and in-house cases. The routine diagnostic work up for each biopsy includes the examination with light, immunofluorescence and electron microscopy, as well as immunohistochemistry and molecular ancillary studies. Combing these findings with a thorough history allows me to come up with a relevant differential diagnosis. The cases are then written up with inclusion of photomicrographs and presented to the attending on service. We review the cases together and make corrections where needed. Afterwards, when the cases are finalized, I gather the ones that were modified so that I may review them and continue learning from them. Beyond the usual handling of cases there are multiple academic activities such as case conferences, lectures and review of cases with the nephrology team. Also there are monthly multidisciplinary conferences with challenging cases, which are discussed and covered with literature review.
