Team SRC Trio Belarus Lithuania BelgiumTraining clinical staff was the key success of the trio sister renal center partnership with Brest Regional Hospital, the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Hospital in Kaunas and Ghent University Hospital, Belgium.

Exchanging the latest knowledge has significantly influenced renal services in and around the city of Brest. Several nephrology and dialysis departments have now been reorganized and have merged into one renal division. The collaboration has particularly helped improve care for pre-dialysis patients and those experiencing complications during dialysis.

Audience trio SRC Belarus Lithuania BelgiumHemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) services have expanded. The prevalence of HD patients in Brest rose from 213 to 330 between 2010 and 2013. In 2014, it went down to 302 patients. In 2005, the number of HD patients was 158 and grew to 208 by 2009. The amount of HD patients has increased in the region from 28,770 to 45,062.

Professor Inga Arūnė Bumblytė from the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, says: “We saw how our colleagues from Belarus were working and the possibilities and conditions for renal patient treatment. We enjoyed the experience of transferring the European model of nephrology and sharing knowledge that we gained from our collaboration with Ghent.”

She adds: “We were happy to see changes and progress in transplantation and dialysis treatment in the Brest region.” The first kidney transplant operation was carried out in 2010 and the number of procedures grew to 47 in 2013.

Paul Harden Trio SRC Belarus Lithuania Belgium26 doctors and 10 nurses from Brest Regional Hospital trained at the institutes in Kaunas and Ghent. Senior nephrologists from Kaunas gave lectures in Russian at conferences in Minsk and Brest.

A project was set up to improve dialysis facilities in Belarus by testing water quality before implementing online hemodiafiltration. Dialysis water and dialysis samples from 40 centers were sent to Ghent for endotoxins level. The results were discussed with each dialysis center and recommendations were made.
