Educational Ambassador in Myanmar

ISN Educational Ambassador Hui-Kim Yap recently made a trip to Myanmar. Based at the National University of Singapore, she taught local doctors at two of the country’s major children’s hospitals the latest skills relating to dialysis and shared her knowledge of clinical nephrology and acute kidney injury.

Myanmar is divided when it comes to public health as the two major hospitals are located in the north (Mandalay) and south (Yangon). Hosted at the Yangon Children’s Hospital and Mandalay Children’s Hospital, the courses allowed more doctors from around the country to attend theses valuable sessions. It also gave some 150 local pediatricians and general practitioners the chance to discuss common problems in pediatric nephrology.

Dr Yap believes it is especially rewarding to see “the interaction with young doctors who are hungry for knowledge, but have to practice in an environment with limited resources.” Many have not attended congresses where they can benefit from meeting experts in the field, discuss challenges and suggest possible solutions that work within their country’s health system.

The ISN Educational Ambassadors Program (EAP) trip also included visits to the dialysis units of both hospitals to discuss on future plans for developing renal replacement programs in the country. “We have identified that with setting up chronic dialysis capabilities for children, there is an urgent need to develop the living‐related pediatric transplant program,” adds Yap.

The EAP enables teachers with specific expertise to train medical professional in developing countries who in general do not have the financial ability to attend the major conferences or teaching seminars conducted by ISN.
