ANZSN strengthens partnership with ISN, supporting more training in Asia Pacific

The Australian & New Zealand Society of Nephrology (ANZSN) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop its partnership with ISN and provide co-funding for the ISN Programs. Both Societies have expressed their mutual commitment to advancing nephrology in the Asia Pacific region.

The Australian and New Zealand Society (ANZSN) promotes and encourages the advancement of education, patient care, scientific knowledge and research in all aspects of nephrology.

Upon signing the MoU, ANZSN President Paolo Ferrari said: ‘We are committed to working for the advancement of nephrology in Australia and New Zealand, but also in low-and-middle income countries from the Asia Pacific region.’

Adding to this statement, ISN Programs Chair John Feehally believes:’This partnership will hopefully provide a template for other institutions in the developed world to express their philanthropic commitment through partnerships with ISN, and serve to provide tangible evidence and increase awareness of ISN’s goals and achievements, and to increase ISN membership.’

Two following ISN Sister Renal Pairs will be the first to benefit from this joint funding in 2017 and will be eligible to upgrade to the next level of the ISN Sister Renal Centers Program in 2018.

Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva, Fiji, paired with the Concord Repatriation General Hospital in Sydney, Australia, hopes to become an independent centre of excellence in nephrology by 2020. It will then serve as the ‘Blue Continent’s’ regional Nephrology hub in support of kidney health for all in the Western Pacific. Although the partnership was established with Concord Repatriation General Hospital, many other renal units around Australia and New Zealand are supporting this project.

They want to improve awareness and advocacy for kidney disease in Fiji, increase access and the use of basic diagnostic tests such as renal biopsies. The center wishes to better how chronic kidney disease is recognised and managed, focusing specifically on diabetic nephropathy and lupus nephritis as well as improve treatment and outcomes for acute kidney injury patients, including the use of dialysis.

The Zainoel Abidin Hospital in Banda Aceh, Indonesia that collaborates with the Gold Coast Hospital in Southport, Australia is looking to build nephrology staff capacity. With the Aceh province counting 4,5 million people, which is divided in 23 districts, the area is too big to cover the needs of all renal patients. Training nephrologists is currently vital as there are only three specialists are available to serve the whole province.
