UK and Nigeria renal centers work together to step up online learning

ISN Educational Ambassador Ibi Erekosima hosted the first international nephrology web conference at a renal center at University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Southern Nigeria, working alongside Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust.

The conference was aimed at promoting best practices in renal care through global partnership. It provided a cutting-edge update on clinical nephrology. This is a shift from the traditional method of hosting an onsite nephrology conference in that part of the country.

Dr Erekosima also leads the ISN Sister Renal Centers partnership between Salford Royal and University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital: “It was an exciting opportunity, allowing us to share our knowledge and expertise with our colleagues in Nigeria, but also support them to improve the care for patients with different types of kidney disease. The video conference was a successful and effective start to developing a strong relationship with Port Harcourt.”

About 113 participants enrolled in the conference including adult and pediatric nephrologists, renal and general medical trainees and renal nurses. The Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, the Provost of the College of Medicine University of Port Harcourt, and the Chief Medical Director University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital also joined the conference.

Erekosima adds: ‘The feedback from participants was excellent and opened opportunities for continuous medical education through webcast. Due to the success, it is planned to be an annual event with the support of the ISN.’
