Vicenza 2019 Ronco and colleaguesWith support from the ISN Young Nephrologists Committee, ISN members recently took part in the 37th Vicenza course on acute kidney injury (AKI) and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). A valuable opportunity for members of the ISN community to make worthwhile contacts while learning more about issues affecting their patients.

The ultimate goal for this generation of professionals is to take home new knowledge and skills and contribute to strengthening renal services in their home country.

About this year's course, Emily See from Austin Health in Melbourne (Australia), says: 'This was a truly exceptional meeting, combining a comprehensive state-of-the-art scientific program with the opportunity to meet world experts in the field of critical care nephrology.'

She adds: 'The CRRT pathway was a definite highlight for me. I particularly enjoyed the sessions on CRRT membrane technology and the evolution of CRRT devices and machines. The session on current controversies in AKI was also of great interest, as were the sessions on the utility of measuring renal functional reserve in predicting the risk and outcome of AKI.’

Other sessions that were of value included those on CRRT anticoagulation, dose, and fluid management strategy, which she said provided extremely pragmatic advice and 'will be of great use to my clinical practice.'

After a 12-hour journey to Milan and a 200 km drive to Vicenza, Krissia Wallbach, from Federal University of São Paulo/Hospital Santa Marcelina (Brazil), said the course was 'among the best in the AKI field.'

She explained how the 'cosy atmosphere' and the 'meet the expert' sessions gave her 'the opportunity to stay close to the professors and feel free to ask questions and share experiences.'

On Twitter, Zhong Hong, from Singapore General Hospital, also expressed the value of interacting with 'the leaders of critical care nephrology.'

Every year, the Vicenza course gathers specialists from different disciplines in a single scientific event with a multidisciplinary approach to treating the critically-ill patients with AKI and multiple organ dysfunction.

The course is accredited by the Italian Ministry of Health thought the ISN Continuing Medical Education Program (CME) and organized with support from the International Renal Research Institute of Vicenza.
