Raising awareness for organ donation and transplant

This week marks the World and European Days for Organ Donation and Transplantation. Medical communities are gathering worldwide  to promote organ donation and transplantation as well as increase international cooperation on these issues. Whether it is for a kidney, heart or lung, about  56,000 people in Europe are on a transplant waiting list. Every day, 12 of them die because of a lack of available organs.

Some 75,000 people worldwide are waiting for a kidney transplant so raising awareness about this life-saving treatment is vital. Kidney donation and transplantation has become a prominent issue in ISN’s activities starting with its involvement in the Declaration of Istanbul. It has also been chosen as the theme for the World Kidney Day (WKD) 2012 campaign.

On March 8 , 2012, WKD will aim to encourage more people to sign up for their national donation schemes and  to educate the public about the benefits of transplantation after end stage kidney disease. To participate in WKD 2012 and find out more about the campaign, visit:
