Reporting on the first ISN Eastern and Central Europe Regional Workshop

The ISN GO Eastern and Central Europe Regional Committee held its first regional workshop on May 26, 2012 during the ERA-EDTA Congress in Paris. Some 35 people attended the meeting, including leaders from Eastern and Central Europe. Participants came from Bosnia Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Romania, Belarus, Russia and Ukraine.

For this event, speakers included John Feehally (ISN President), Laszlo Rosivall (ISN GO EC Europe Committee Chairman), David Harris (ISN GO Fellowship Program Chairman), Norbert Lameire (ISN GO CME Program Chair), Paul Harden (ISN GO SRC Program Chairman), Edita Ziginskiene (Lithuania, SRC Program participant) and Aleh Kalachik (Belarus, SRC Program participant).

John Feehally welcomed all participants and started the meeting by introducing ISN in general and continued his talk with some words on the ISN Global Outreach activities, and more specifically about the Educational Ambassador and Research and Prevention Programs. The Fellowship and SRC Programs were presented by David Harris and Paul Harden. Paul Harden was followed by Aleh Kalachik who described the success of the SRC link between Belarus and Ghent who is now supporting another center in Lithuania.

Edita Ziginskiene from Lithuania gave a very good presentation and summarized all achievements in Kaunas (Lithuania) thanks to the support of Ghent (Belgium) in the context of the SRC Program. Laszlo Rosivall closed the round of presentations by encouraging all attendees to spread the word about ISN and the GO Programs in their countries.

Everyone agreed that overall the workshop was a success. Several concrete suggestions for program modifications and improvements emerged and will be considered by the GO Core Committee.

There are three more ISN GO Regional Workshops set to take place this year. The OSEA workshop will take place on September 11, 2012 from 12.30 to 14.00 at the ISPD Congress in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The East Asia session will be organized on October 12, 2012 in Chengdu during Chinese Society of Nephrology meeting. A last workshop will take place in South Asia during Indian Society of Nephrology's annual meeting, from December 6 to 8, 2012 in Ahmedabad.
