The ISN Young Nephrologists Committee (YNC) Mentoring Program was established in 2010 to foster international relationships between nephrologists and nephrologists-intraining or more junior nephrologists/nephrology researchers. Today, ISN is actively expanding this program to increase the number of mentors and mentees and connect discussions on clinical cases and/or research projects of mutual interest.

Visit the ISN YNC Mentorship Program page for more information on this exciting initiative. YNC member Julie Lin from the Boston Brigham and Women’s hospital says that the program is quite flexible. Most mentees are looking to interact with their mentor on a monthly basis and favor international exchange.

She started interacting with Nagesh Aghor from India. “Mentees can get tips on how to start a research project or get advice on writing up their project. On a clinical level, I offered Nagesh a chance to spend time in Boston on an observership,” she adds.

So far, 15 pairs have participated in this initiative. The YNC is enthusiastic about its benefi ts and would like to see the program grow so all current YNC committee members and other ISN members can volunteer as mentors.

This program really gives mentors the chance to expand their contacts and increase visibility internationally. YNC members span different geographical regions that make up the ISN community. The initiative reveals once again how the YNC understands the needs of the emerging medical community to develop education, research, professional development and leadership opportunities within ISN.
