Nephrology community remembers Detlef Schlöndorff
Detlef Schlöndorff, MD, died of pancreatic cancer in New York City on October 16, 2019, surrounded by his family. He was a prolific renal investigator for over five decades, training and mentoring over 50 fellows from around the globe, including some of the current world leaders in academic nephrology. He received many prizes in recognition of his work: the Franz Volhard Medal of the German Nephrology Society, the Luis Hernando International Nephrology Award from the Spanish Renal Foundation, and the Jean Hamburger Award from the International Society of Nephrology (ISN). He was active in multiple leadership roles within the ISN, including as editor in chief of the Kidney International from 2012-2017.
Detlef was a warm, engaging, cultured academic. Held in esteem by hundreds of friends and colleagues worldwide and devoted to his family, he will be greatly missed by all in his extensive community.
The ISN deeply mourns his loss and offers its sincerest condolences to his family.

The first new edition of the Declaration of Istanbul on Organ Trafficking and Transplant Tourism, a seminal document that has helped to guide ethical practice in organ donation and transplantation around the world, was presented at an international workshop in Madrid, Spain.
We announce with regret the recent death of past ISN President, Don Seldin.
Seldin was born in New York, USA and after training in medicine and nephrology moved to Dallas where he spent the rest of his career building a formidable teaching and research department at University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. He was President of ISN from 1984 to 1987; the Seldin Lecture named in his honour continues to be given at the World Congress of Nephrology.
A fuller appreciation of his life and his remarkable achievements in nephrology will be published soon in Kidney International.
We are now calling for expressions of interest or nominations for two positions on the Declaration of Istanbul Custodian Group (DICG) Council. ISN ExCom and Council have decided that henceforward expressions of interest and nominations will be called for and decided on, using transparent and uniform processes, for leadership positions within ISN. Deadline is May 17, 2018.

Professor Kirpal Singh Chugh, fondly called the Father of Nephrology in India and a prominent ISN leader, passed away in Chandigarh, India on September 17, 2017. He was 85.
ISN has announced the appointment of David Harris (Australia) as its new president. He succeeds Adeera Levin, from University of British Columbia (Canada), who held the post from 2015 until the ISN World Congress of Nephrology in April 2017.
On February 7 and 8, 2017, ISN participated to the Summit of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences on Organ Trafficking and Transplant Tourism in Vatican City. ISN fully endorsed the Summit’s Statement, which calls on all religious, political and social leaders, national and international legislators to recognize that organ and human trafficking for organ removal are ‘true crimes against humanity.’

ISN announces with regret the death of Evert J. Dorhout Mees. He had a distinguished career as an academic nephrologist in Utrecht, The Netherlands. After retirement he moved to Ismir, Turkey where he did much to help strengthen nephrology in that part of the country.

Susan Quaggin, a long standing member of the ISN, has now become the American Society of Nephrology’s newest Councilor. Dr. Quaggin will begin her term during ASN Kidney Week 2015 and will serve through Kidney Week 2022.
ISN announces with great regret the death of Priscilla Kincaid-Smith of Melbourne, Australia. She was ISN President 1972-75, and until this year had been ISN's only woman President.

ISN announces with regret the death of Gabriel Richet. One of the early giants of French and international nephrology, he was a founding member of ISN. Among his many roles in ISN leadership, he was co-General Secretary of ISN’s first Congress in Geneva and Evian in 1960, and ISN President from 1981-84.

The nephrology community worldwide mourns the loss of Dr. Karl D. Nolph, who passed away at home on the morning of June 16, 2014. Dr. Nolph was a giant among all of us, helping revolutionize the worldwide approach to patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). He is synonymous with the modality of peritoneal dialysis and its development, which is perhaps his most recognized contribution to nephrology and medicine.

Lots of stories were published this week about a "laboratory-grown kidney" being transplanted into animals. The experiment published in Nature Medicine by Jeremy Strong and his co-workers from the Massachusetts General Hospital represents an exciting advance on the road to creating organs for those suffering from kidney disease.
