A tribute to Hai-yan Wang Featured

She was the former Chair of the ISN East Asia Regional Committee and recently received an ISN Pioneer Award for her efforts in nephrology.

Caring for kidney patients in Malawi Featured

Blantyre is in southern Malawi, not far from the border with Mozambique. With a population of over 600,000 it is the country’s second biggest city behind the capital Lilongwe, and is a major financial centre. Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) is a tertiary referral centre for the entire Southern region in Malawi with over 1000 inpatient beds. There are around 30 medical admissions per day with over 200 general medical inpatients. The burden of kidney disease in both medical and non-medical patients is large.

The ISN is partnering with the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation to incorporate Acute Kidney Injury incidence data from the Initiative into the upcoming Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2014 Study.

The GBD Study is the world’s largest single source of leading contributors to health loss within society.  Incorporation of AKI into this study will allow for a seminal determination of the contribution of AKI to loss of life and health throughout the world during the past 2 decades.

It was organized in two parts and focused on the topic of integrated pathologic diagnosis of renal diseases and improving techniques.The first part was organized under auspices of the 2014 International Forum of Renal Pathology and the 9th National Renal Pathology Conference in Beijing. The second part took place at the 2014 Harvard and Zhengzhou University Sister Renal Center (SRC) Forum.

Gabriel Richet (1916-2014)

Richet portrait face bw webISN announces with regret the death of Gabriel Richet. One of the early giants of French and international nephrology, he was a founding member of ISN. Among his many roles in ISN leadership, he was co-General Secretary of ISN’s first Congress in Geneva and Evian in 1960, and  ISN  President from 1981-84.

Over the next five months, ISN Education will be holding a webinar series on the subject of dialysis. The series will consist of five separate webinar sessions facilitated by five different specialists with years of experience in various areas of dialysis.

ISN returns to Myanmar for CME

Ward rounds Myanmar JFBecause of previous political restrictions, this was the first ISN visit to Myanmar since the late 1990s when a number of visits were made involving senior ISN leaders (including Clarkson, Dirks, Schrier, Atkins and Kerr). During the restrictions, healthcare spending was severely restricted (1.5% of GDP). There has now been significant change with the arrival of the new government. Healthcare expenditure is growing and it is expected to reach 5% of GDP in the next two to three years.
