During the 39th Annual Meeting of the Korean Society of Nephrology (KSN), held in Seoul from May 23 to 26, 2019, the KSN-ISN Joint Symposium focused on the parlous state of kidney care, and in fact all medical care, in North Korea, and looked at possible solutions to this dire situation.

Compared to South Korea, in North Korea the average lifespan is 11 years less, the mortality rate of children under 5 years is 7 times higher, 80% of children have stunted growth, and kidney care is rudimentary.

South Korean nephrologists including Daeyoung Roh and Sang-Eun Park, under the leadership of the President of KSN Yon Su Kim, have exciting plans to advance the standard of kidney care in North Korea, when the political situation permits. ISN can play a key role in helping these plans come to fruition.
