The unique format brought an international focus to the key kidney health challenges and opportunities affecting the North America and Caribbean region.<\/p>\n<p>Given the health disparities identified during the global COVID-19 pandemic, this GKPF highlighted some of the challenges faced by specific populations in accessing kidney healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>The Forum\u2019s overarching objective is to enable policy makers, patients, clinicians and administrators\/funders to better understand the opportunities to improve kidney health within their region(s), and propose concrete solutions that will help deliver such goals.[\/vc_column_text][vc_video link=&#8221;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xbEBu6Bp_dE&#8221; el_width=&#8221;60&#8243; align=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<div id=\"richard\" class=\"modal fade\" role=\"dialog\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n<div class=\"modal-dialog modal-dialog-centered\" role=\"document\">\n<div class=\"modal-content\">\n<div class=\"modal-header\">\n<h3 class=\"modal-title\">Richard Horton<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"modal-body\">\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3407 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theisn.org\/wcn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/Richard-Horton.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" \/>Richard Horton is Editor-in-Chief of The Lancet. He qualified in physiology and medicine with honours from the University of Birmingham in 1986. He joined The Lancet in 1990, moving to New York as North American Editor in 1993. In 2016, he chaired the Expert Group for the High Level Commission on Health Employment and Economic Growth, convened by Presidents Hollande of France and Zuma of South Africa. In 2011, he was elected a Foreign Associate of the US Institute of Medicine and, in 2015, he received the Friendship Award from the Government of China. In 2019 he was awarded the WHO Director-General\u2019s Health Leaders Award for outstanding leadership in global health and the Roux Prize in recognition of innovation in the application of global health evidence. He works to develop the idea of planetary health \u2013 the health of human civilizations and the ecosystems on which they depend.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<div id=\"george\" class=\"modal fade\" role=\"dialog\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n<div class=\"modal-dialog modal-dialog-centered\" role=\"document\">\n<div class=\"modal-content\">\n<div class=\"modal-header\">\n<h3 class=\"modal-title\">Sir George Alleyne<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"modal-body\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3407 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theisn.org\/wcn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/Sir-Georges-photograph-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" \/>Sir George Alleyne, a native of Barbados is a medical graduate of the University of the West Indies (UWI) where he subsequently pursued an academic career. He was appointed Professor of Medicine in UWI in 1972 and Chair of the Department of Medicine in 1976. He joined the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1981, became Director on 1 February 1995 and after re-election in 1998, completed a second four-year term on 31 January 2003. In 2003 he was elected Director Emeritus of PAHO. From February 2003 until December 2010 he was the UN Secretary General\u2019s Special Envoy for HIV\/AIDS in the Caribbean. From 2003 to 2017 he was Chancellor of the University of the West Indies and was a visiting professor at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University also from 2003 to 2017. Sir George has an extensive scientific bibliography and has given numerous presentations and lectures about a variety of health issues. Sir George has received numerous awards in recognition of his work, including honorary degrees, prestigious decorations and national and international honors. In 1990, he was made Knight Bachelor by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for his services to Medicine. In 2001, he was awarded the Order of the Caribbean Community, the highest honor that can be conferred on a Caribbean national. He is married to Sylvan Chen and they have three children.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<div id=\"soumya\" class=\"modal fade\" role=\"dialog\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n<div class=\"modal-dialog modal-dialog-centered\" role=\"document\">\n<div class=\"modal-content\">\n<div class=\"modal-header\">\n<h3 class=\"modal-title\">Dr. Soumya Swaminathan<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"modal-body\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3407 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theisn.org\/wcn\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/who-soumya-swaminathan-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" \/>Dr. Soumya Swaminathan was appointed as WHO\u2019s first Chief Scientist in March 2019. She heads the Science division that was created to strengthen the organisation\u2019s core scientific work and ensure the quality and consistency of its norms and standards. The Division also promotes the use of digital tools and technologies to help achieve the SDGs and will work on governance frameworks to regulate new technologies like Artificial intelligence and genome editing. The division also will have a foresight function that enables WHO to stay ahead of the curve and will promote research and development that leads to products that meet unmet public health needs.<\/p>\n<p>She was previously Deputy Director-General for Programmes (DDP). A paediatrician from India and a globally recognized researcher on tuberculosis and HIV, she brings with her 30 years of experience in clinical care and research and has worked throughout her career to translate research into impactful programmes. Most recently, Dr Swaminathan was Secretary of the Department of Health Research and Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research. From 2009 to 2011, she also served as Coordinator of the UNICEF\/UNDP\/World Bank\/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) in Geneva.<\/p>\n<p>She has sat on several WHO and global advisory bodies and committees, including the WHO Expert Panel to Review Global Strategy and Plan of Action on Public Health, Innovation and Intellectual Property, the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group of the Global TB Department at WHO, and as Co-Chair of the Lancet Commission on TB.
