The Indian Society of Nephrology was born when 10 like-minded and strong-willed individuals sat together on a balmy day in Mumbai (then Bombay) in 1970. Since its inception, the Society focused on the advancement of education and good practices aimed towards improving the care of patients with kidney diseases.

The Society has continuously provided a platform for the dissemination and sharing of scientific ideas amongst professionals interested in the study of kidney diseases. In the early years, when the ISN meetings were held along with the Association of Physicians of India to the organization of the first independent Annual ISNCON at Jaipur in 1991, the Indian Society of Nephrology has come a long way.

The Indian Society of Nephrology currently has more than 2000 members. A vast majority of the members are nephrologists, but we also have representation from other specialists, such as transplant surgeons, pathologists and basic scientists which helps widen the base and outlook of the Society. Our aim is that every practising nephrologist in this country becomes a member of Society and contributes to providing treatment to every corner of India.

The Indian Society of Nephrology believe in representation from all quarters and has always encouraged opinions and involvement from various groups like Youths and Women in the society. The Society also collaborates closely with other like-minded societies such as the International Society of Nephrology, the Transplantation Society, the Asian-Pacific Society of Nephrology and the American Society of Nephrology for closer international integration.
