KI-ISN Early Career Researcher Award: Basic Science

The KI-ISN Early Career Researcher Awards recognize outstanding research in basic and clinical science published in Kidney International (KI) in 2023.

Dr. Stefan Haug is a medical doctor, bioinformatician, and a postdoctoral fellow in the Institute of Genetic Epidemiology at the University of Freiburg (Germany). His scientific work is focused on complex genetic traits and diseases, particularly diseases of the kidney and renal protein handling. Dr. Haug uses genetic and molecular data from large patient- and population studies to identify new mechanisms and risk genes for kidney diseases. He specializes in integrating his genetic screens with orthogonal datasets from kidney specific analyses with various technologies including RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, Hi-C, and spatial transcriptomics in order to prioritize the most promising candidate genes and identify their cellular site of action. His latest work published in Kidney International sheds light on kidney medulla-specific gene expression and regulation and provides an epigenome browser for the scientific community.

Dr. Haug was named one of the KI-ISN Early Career Researchers for Basic Science for his paper, Multi-omic analysis of human kidney tissue identified medulla-specific gene expression patterns [https://www.kidney-international.org/article/S0085-2538(23)00781-0/fulltext].

The KI-ISN Early Career Researchers will be acknowledged in the WCN ‘Editors’ Pick of ISN Journals: KI and KIR’ session taking place Monday, April 15, 2024, from 9-10:30 am Argentina Time in Hall C2.
