Speaker Interview

Sustainable Kidney Care is the ‘Green’ Choice for the World

In her Hugh de Wardener lecture at WCN’22, Dr. Frances Mortimer, medical director of the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare in Oxford (UK), will explain what is meant by “sustainable healthcare” and what can be done to achieve it. She will underline why sustainable healthcare is important for health conditions, especially kidney health, as well as the environment.
“Human health is dependent on healthy ecosystems for the absolute fundamentals: clean air, food, water, shelter, and freedom from violence, for example, from conflict over scarce resources and migration. Currently, all of these are threatened by the global ecological crisis resulting from human activities,” says Dr. Mortimer.

Featured Talk

Setting up Successful Urgent-start Peritoneal Dialysis Programs

Dr. Esther Tan Zhao Zhi is a consultant nephrologist at the Selayang Hospital near Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. In her talk at WCN’22, she will discuss how urgent-start peritoneal dialysis (USPD) programs work and the key elements for their success.
Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is greatly under-utilized in most parts of the world, despite being preferred by many nephrologists and patients. Various factors, including late end-stage referrals and urgent kidney replacement therapy, mean that PD may not be considered a treatment option. But new techniques for USPD treatment allow for initiation within days.

Searching for Genetic Markers for Inflammation and Fibrosis in Kidney Disease

Dr. Katalin Susztak is a professor of medicine and genetics at the University of Pennsylvania, USA. She is a physician-scientist investigating the genetic and molecular mechanism of kidney disease development, with the ultimate goal of finding new, more effective therapies.
In her talk at WCN’22, Professor Susztak will discuss her research to identify a defect in mitochondrial integrity and function that can lead to the development of kidney disease in animal models and patients and could offer a new therapeutic pathway for patients with CKD.

Aiming for Improvements in Kidney Function Testing

Dr. Lydia Kamaruzaman is a nephrologist at the Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and the National University of Malaysia. In her talk at WCN’22, she will discuss the biomarkers available to estimate glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and potential estimating equations and their limitations.
Dr. Kamaruzaman explains: “The most common marker used to estimate GFR is creatinine, a by-product of muscle metabolism. But because muscle mass varies, the serum concentration of creatinine may differ between individuals with the same level of kidney function.”
