Abraham Verghese is the Linda R. Meier and Joan F. Lane Provostial Professor in the Department of Medicine at Stanford University and is board-certified in infectious diseases and pulmonary medicine. He leads PRESENCE, a multidisciplinary center studying the human experience of patients, physicians, and caregivers.
Professor Verghese is an acclaimed writer and a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. His books include My Own Country, Cutting for Stone, and The Covenant of Water, a New York Times bestseller and Oprah’s Book Club selection.
He is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and holds honorary degrees from several universities. In 2016, he received the National Humanities Medal presented by former U.S. President Barack Obama.
