Schrier Award

The Schrier Award recognizes the outstanding achievements of graduated ISN Sister Renal Center (SRC) and ISN-TTS Sister Transplant Center (STC) partnerships. The winner of the 2026 Schrier Award is the SRC Indonesia-Australia partnership:

  • Emerging Center: Dr Kariadi Hospital, Semarang, Indonesia, in close collaboration with the Indonesian Society of Nephrology, Central Java Chapter
  • Supporting Center: Austin Health, Melbourne, Australia

The ISN Sister Renal Center (SRC) partnership between Emerging Center Dr Kariadi Hospital in Semarang, Indonesia, in close collaboration with the Indonesian Society of Nephrology, Central Java Chapter, and Supporting Center Austin Health, in Melbourne, Australia, was established in 2019 to strengthen nephrology care and education in Central Java, Indonesia. The partnership has received funding support from the ISN and the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology (ANZSN).

The SRC partnership resulted in sustained, system-level improvements in nephrology care, education, and workforce capacity across Central Java. The collaboration was built on regular reciprocal visits, monthly multidisciplinary meetings, and continuous virtual education, maintaining momentum even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Clinical service delivery improved substantially. The peritoneal dialysis program expanded four-fold, with patient numbers increasing from 67 to 277 at Dr Kariadi Hospital following SRC-supported symposia, skills transfer, and bilateral clinical exchanges. Kidney transplantation services progressed from limited and fragmented care to managing more complex and immunologically sensitized recipients locally, supported by visiting transplant specialists and multidisciplinary case discussions during SRC visits in 2022–2023.

Kidney pathology capacity strengthened significantly. Pathologist experts in glomerulonephritis increased from two to six people, supported by monthly multidisciplinary kidney pathology meetings with Austin Health. More than 40 kidney biopsy cases are now reviewed annually through these meetings, resulting in faster turnaround times, improved clinicopathological correlation, and greater clinician confidence in diagnosis and management.

Education, training, and academic output showed measurable growth. Two nephrology fellows from Dr Kariadi Hospital completed intensive three-week observerships at Austin Health, gaining hands-on exposure to advanced nephrology, transplantation, kidney biopsy, and multidisciplinary care. Educational activities reached a wide audience through three regional symposia (>500 participants), six hands-on workshops (>100 participants), and joint webinars (>300 participants). Trainee academic engagement increased steadily, with rising national and international conference participation, multiple presentation awards, and two peer-reviewed publications.

Dr Kariadi Hospital, the Indonesian Society of Nephrology, Central Java Chapter, and Austin Health are grateful for this SRC partnership, which has delivered lasting improvements in clinical services and capability, education, and professional development in Central Java.

The Schrier Award will be presented in WCN Plenary 3 on March 30, 2026 at 11:35 a.m. Japan Time in the Main Hall.
