2025 KI Best Reviewer

Kidney International® (KI) reviewers were evaluated by number of reviews completed, quality of each review as assessed by the KI Associate Editors, and length of time manuscripts were under review.

Dr. Nicola Martin Tomas is an attending physician and scientist in the III. department of medicine, nephrology, at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) in Hamburg, Germany. He specializes in internal medicine and nephrology, focusing on clinical practice and research related to immune-mediated kidney diseases, particularly focusing on autoantibody-mediated podocytopathies and the development of mechanism-based therapies.

Dr. Tomas completed his medical studies at the University of Witten/Herdecke in Witten, Germany, graduating in 2011. Following his education, he gained valuable experience as a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology in Nice, France, where he worked under the guidance of Professor Gérard Lambeau. His research has contributed to the understanding of membranous nephropathy, particularly through the identification of THSD7A as a podocyte target antigen in a subset of patients, which has enhanced both diagnosis and treatment approaches. In 2019, he became a group leader at UKE, and continues to lead several projects in the area of antibody-mediated kidney diseases like membranous nephropathy and podocytopathies. He and his team were instrumental for the characterization of anti-nephrin autoantibodies in adults and children with podocytopathies. His latest research project is supported by a grant from the European Research Council.

Dr. Tomas’ work has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Dr. Martini Prize for his groundbreaking work on anti-THSD7A antibodies (2017), the Hans-U.-Zollinger Prize of the German Society of Nephrology (2023), the scientific honorary award of the German Society of Nephrology (2024), and the Wilhelm Kriz Early/Mid-Career Research Achievement Award (2025).

The ISN-KI Early Career Researchers will be acknowledged in The ISN-KI Editorial Fellows Session: The Best of 2025 KI Articles, taking place on Monday, March 30, from 9:25-10:55 a.m. Japan Time in room 315.
