Our commitment to sustainability

The ISN recognizes its responsibility to incorporate social and environmental sustainability into the congress and the organization in general. We are committed to integrating measures to make this congress and future congresses more climate and future friendly.

Several actions are already identified which will reduce the congress’ environmental impact. Some of these initiatives are listed below, including ways that you can help too. For any questions, ideas or suggestions, please contact us infowcn@theisn.org.

Reduce printed materials

WCN will no longer print an abstract book, an extended program book or daily newspaper. Publications will primarily be provided in digital formats. Maximum use will be made of digital signage and digital communication channels available at the venue.

Sustainable food practices

Food and beverage are among the largest contributors to a meeting’s carbon footprint. We aim to use the most environmentally friendly containers and utensils for catered events. ISN works with caterers to source local and seasonal ingredients, with menus featuring mostly vegetarian and vegan options. To minimize waste, leftover food will be available for participants to take home, and attendees are encouraged to bring their own water bottles. Water stations will be provided throughout the venue.

Social sustainability

ISN takes a holistic approach to sustainability and emphasizes social responsibility. We ensure participants are well informed about various aspects of their attendance, including travel, visas, cultural awareness, and local guidance for their stay. To promote equity and inclusion, ISN also provides travel grants to support participants who might otherwise be unable to attend the congress.

Accommodation

The hotels for faculty, staff, and delegates are conveniently located within walking distance to the venue, or easily reached by public transportation.

Communication and education

In line with UN SDG 4, ISN aims to provide more information about sustainable event attendance to its participants. Communication about the measures undertaken and other sustainability aspects will be given greater prominence.

Sustainability consulting and strategy

Together with event agency ECENT, which specializes in environmentally friendly events, ISN will conduct a sustainability analysis and report for WCN’26. Taking a holistic view of the congress’ sustainability, the assessment will calculate incurred emissions and identify concrete measures that will form the basis of a long-term WCN sustainability strategy.

How you can help make the congress more sustainable

  • Choose greener travel options: Whenever possible, use environmentally-compatible public transportation or carpool to reach the event venue.
  • Offset your carbon emissions: If you need to travel by car or plane, consider offsetting your CO₂ emissions through a verified compensation program.
  • Reduce and recycle waste: Please sort your waste (PET, glass, paper, metal, batteries, etc.) using the recycling stations available at the hotel and venue.
  • Get around sustainably: To explore the city, walk or use public transport. Learn more about transportation options.
