Bywaters Award
The Bywaters Award recognizes outstanding contributions made to the understanding of acute kidney injury. The award was established in honor of Eric Bywaters, who described crush syndrome in the 1940s.
Dr. John Kellum is Distinguished Professor of Critical Care Medicine, Medicine, Bioengineering and Clinical and Translational Science and holds an Endowed Chair in Critical Care Research from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, USA. He is currently on leave and serving as the Chief Medical Officer for Spectral Medical, a late-stage medical device company developing diagnostics and therapeutics for sepsis. Dr. Kellum received his medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio in 1988. His postgraduate training includes an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Rochester, New York, and a Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. His research interests span various aspects of critical care medicine, but center in critical care nephrology, sepsis, and acute kidney injury. He has authored more than 750 publications and has won several awards for teaching. He lectures widely and has given more than 500 seminars and invited lectures worldwide.
Commenting on his award, Dr. Kellum says, “I am grateful and humbled to be selected as the recipient of the 2026 ISN Bywaters Award for excellence in the field of acute kidney injury. Previous award winners are among the most accomplished and respected investigators in our field. I am truly honored to be counted among them.”
Professor Kellum will receive his award in WCN Plenary Session 2 on March 29, 2026, from 2 p.m. Japan Standard Time in the Main Hall.
