ISN-IPNA Webinar: Chronic Dialysis in Children in Low Resource Settings

  • 2 PM CET

Chronic dialysis in children presents unique challenges in resource-limited settings, where pediatric-specific infrastructures, supplies, and trained personnel are often scarce. Centers catering to pediatric patients rely on adapted adult equipment, improvised protocols, and locally developed solutions to sustain lifesaving therapy. While essential, these adaptations raise important questions about safety, efficacy, and long-term outcomes. This session will present two cases that highlight the complexities of delivering chronic hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis in low-resource contexts, with an emphasis on infection prevention, fluid and blood pressure management, maximizing ultrafiltration, and strengthening nurse-led care. Through case-based discussion, participants will gain practical insights into how centers adapt chronic dialysis delivery under challenging conditions, and identify lessons that can be generalized to optimize outcomes even when ideal resources are not available.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify challenges in pediatric chronic dialysis and associated complication risks in resource-limited settings.
  • Evaluate practical adaptations (protocols, fluid management, ultrafiltration optimization) for hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.
  • Apply strategies to strengthen outcomes via nurse training, infection prevention, and context-appropriate care models.
