Events - ISN North America and Caribbean Regional Board Webinar: Kidney disease in the Caribbean: Lessons from successes and paths to new discoveries

This session brings together experts to share insights and experiences related to kidney disease in the Caribbean region. The session comprises three presentations highlighting different aspects of kidney disease research, diagnosis, and management.

The first presentation, “Pediatric CKD in Jamaica: how teaching glomerular disease basics to primary care doctors changed the picture” by Sandrica Young-Peart, focuses on the impact of educating primary care doctors on glomerular disease fundamentals and its effect on pediatric CKD in Jamaica. The presentation explores the transformative role of knowledge dissemination in improving the diagnosis and management of glomerular diseases among children.

The second presentation, “CKD and ESKD in adults: common, uncommon, and understudied causes” by Lori-Ann Fisher, delves into the diverse spectrum of causes contributing to chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) in adults. This presentation sheds light on both well-known and lesser-known factors leading to CKD, highlighting the need for comprehensive research and understanding of the underlying causes to enhance prevention and treatment strategies.

The third presentation, “Registries and lessons learned in South America” by Maria Carlota Gonzalez Bedat, explores the significance of registries in capturing valuable data and providing insights into kidney disease patterns in South America. The presentation examines the lessons learned from registry initiatives, emphasizing the importance of robust data collection and analysis in informing policy decisions, improving patient care, and identifying research priorities.

The final presentation “Status And Challenges for Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique” by Lisa Radix, delves into the review of kidney care in these regions. The presentation aims to identify the existing challenges and potential interventions that could substantially improve outcomes.

Together, these presentations offer a comprehensive overview of kidney disease in the Caribbean, covering pediatric CKD, adult CKD and ESKD causes, and the role of registries in South America. Attendees will gain valuable insights into successful interventions, areas of focus for future research, and the potential for collaboration and knowledge exchange in advancing kidney health in the region.
