ISN Renal Pathology Working Group Webinar: The Value of renal biopsy and its technicalities – get the most from the sample!

Percutaneous kidney biopsy is an important tool in the assessment of medical kidney diseases and renal transplant dysfunction. The goals of this webinar are to share the standard methods of handling kidney biopsies and the systematic way of tissue examination of the glomeruli, tubulo-interstitium and blood vessels using light, immunohistochemical and electron microscopic techniques. Then integrate these findings with the clinical and laboratory data for a comprehensive report. The updated version of the Renal Pathology laboratory manual will be introduced. 

Learning objectives: 

  • Become familiar with the handling of kidney biopsy tissue and triaging for light, immunofluorescence and electron microscopy. 
  • Enable identification of various kidney structures and lesions using histochemical stains. 
  • Understand the selection and utility of immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry on kidney biopsies in appropriate settings. 
  • Demonstrate the importance of electron microscopy in medical kidney diseases.
