ISN Webinar: Dialysis or conservative kidney management for kidney failure: the first results of the prepare for kidney care randomized controlled trial

Prepare for Kidney Care is the first randomised controlled trial to compare the effectiveness of dialysis and conservative kidney management in older people living with kidney failure and frailty or multimorbidity.
While a combination of quality and length of life formed the primary outcome, many other outcomes relevant for shared informed decision making have been studied.
Prepare for Kidney Care was conducted across 31 renal unit in the UK, recruiting 445 participants who were then followed for an average of 4.5 years. This webinar will begin by setting out what is already known about this topic, before moving on to explain the design and present the results and conclusions. An expert patient and independent expert health professional will then reflect on the findings. Finally, there will be an opportunity for webinar attendees to put questions to the panel.
Learning objectives:
- To understand what is currently known about the effectiveness of dialysis and conservative kidney management in older people living with kidney failure and multimorbidity or frailty.
- To learn whether/ how the relative effectiveness of the treatments changes when a randomised controlled trial approach is used to ensure a fair comparison between the two treatments.
- To understand when, and in whom, the findings can be used in shared informed decision making, and when, and in whom, they might need to be used more cautiously.
