@ISNEducation Nuances in Nephrology Webinar: The renin-angiotensin system and kidney disease

The last decade was crucial for our understanding of the Renin-Angiotensin System (RAS) as a two-axis, counter-regulatory system, divided into the classical axis, formed by angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), angiotensin II (Ang II) and the angiotensin type 1 receptor (AT1R), and the alternative axis comprised of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), angiotensin-(1-7) [Ang-(1-7)] and the Mas receptor. In this presentation, we characterize the two RAS axes, the potential role of their components in experimental and human kidney diseases, and the perspectives of novel treatments.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To be updated on the current view of the Renin-Angiotensin System (RAS)
  2. To understand the potential role of RAS molecules in kidney diseases
  3. To be aware of novel therapeutic perspectives by modulating the RAS
