Dr. Alexis Garcia Lopez from Nicaragua was recently selected to receive an ISN Interventional Nephrology Scholarship to train in Peru.

This selection coincided with the ISN receiving a generous donation from

Roberto Cieza in memory of his late father, Dr. Javier Cieza (1949-2022). Dr. Cieza was a prominent nephrologist in Peru and a long-term ISN member. He was especially well-known as an outstanding educator and mentor to early-career nephrologists.

As a fitting tribute to Dr. Cieza’s legacy, the ISN put this donation toward training programs for younger members, notably to support Dr. Lopez during his time training in interventional nephrology in Peru. Dr. Lopez has therefore been named the “Dr. Javier Cieza Memorial Scholar” in honor of Dr. Cieza.

Dr. Lopez completed his four-week training in interventional nephrology procedures in November with the Asociación Peruana del Acceso Vascular in Lima, supervised by Dr. Edwin Castillo.

Roberto Cieza was delighted to hear that his donation had been used to further Dr. Lopez’s training. He is arranging to send him copies of his father’s books. Dr. Lopez expressed his gratitude to the ISN and Roberto Cieza for supporting his training and for the honor of carrying on Dr. Cieza’s legacy.
