ISN Webinar: Global Strategies to Increase Home Dialysis Uptake Across Diverse Care Models

  • 8 AM CET

Despite the well-documented clinical and economic benefits, the uptake of home dialysis modalities—including peritoneal dialysis (PD) and home hemodialysis (HHD)—remains challenging globally. Barriers include limited training for healthcare professionals, inadequate infrastructure, and policy-level inertia in some regions, as well as insufficient patient education, all of which reduce awareness of home dialysis as a viable treatment option. These challenges are particularly pronounced in resource-limited settings.

This educational activity examines system-level challenges to expanding home dialysis (including PD-first/ PD preferred strategies) while highlighting the importance of collaboration between nephrology teams, patients and primary care physicians in supporting shared decision-making. Strengthening knowledge of dialysis fundamentals, integrated care models, and patient-centered communication across disciplines can empower individuals to select the modality best aligned with their needs, ultimately improving satisfaction and outcomes globally.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify key challenges to implementing Home Dialysis, including PD-first / PD-preferred policies across different health systems worldwide.
  • Describe how collaboration between nephrology teams, patients, patients and care givers can enhance the quality, continuity, and support of patients on home dialysis.
  • To evaluate different models of care and international strategies that may contribute to improving access to home dialysis therapies, enabling a greater number of patients to benefit from these treatment modalities.
