Tips to prepare a strong nomination package

To assist with preparing a strong candidate nomination letter, consider addressing the following questions, if/as applicable, explaining why the nominee should receive the award. Note that the nomination letter may be signed by multiple people.

The Jean Hamburger Award recognizes exceptional research in nephrology with a clinical emphasis.

Primary area:

  • Does/did the candidate’s research focus on clinical aspects of nephrology?

Research impact:

  • Has the quality, quantity, and impact of the candidate’s research been truly exceptional, and why?
    • Has the candidate had a strong and sustained record of high-quality, high impact publications?
    • Have their research contributions improved the health of individuals affected by kidney disease?
    • How have their research contributions advanced nephrology practice?
    • What tangible benefits have their research brought to people with kidney diseases?

Mentorship:

  • Have they played an important role in training or mentoring the kidney researchers of the future?

The Bywaters Award recognizes outstanding contributions made to the understanding of Acute Kidney Injury.

Primary area:

  • Does/did the candidate’s research focus on basic or clinical aspects of AKI?

Research impact:

  • Has the quality, quantity, and impact of the candidate’s research been truly exceptional, and why?
    • Has the candidate had a strong and sustained record of high-quality, high impact publications?
    • Have their research contributions enhanced the health of individuals with or at risk for AKI?
    • Have their contributions led to fundamental changes in the AKI research field, or otherwise been seminal for AKI researchers?
    • How have their research contributions advanced nephrology practice?

Mentorship:

  • Have they played an important role in training or mentoring the AKI researchers of the future?

The Alfred Newton Richards Award recognizes outstanding basic research in fields relevant to nephrology.

Primary area:

  • Has the candidate’s basic research focus been in “fields relevant to nephrology”?

Research impact:

  • Has the quality, quantity, and impact of the candidate’s basic research been truly exceptional, and why?
    • Has the candidate had a strong and sustained record of high-quality, high impact publications?
    • Have their research contributions led to fundamental changes in their research field, or otherwise qualify as seminal work?
    • Have their research contributions led to advancements in nephrology practice or related disciplines?
    • What tangible benefits have their research brought to patients?

Mentorship:

  • Have they played an important role in training or mentoring the basic researchers of the future?

The Roscoe R. Robinson Award acknowledges outstanding achievements in the field of education in nephrology and medicine.

Primary area:

  • Has the quality, quantity, and impact of the candidate’s educational contributions been truly exceptional, and why?
    • Have their educational contributions improved the health of individuals affected by kidney disease and/or other medical conditions?
    • How have their educational contributions advanced medical practice?
    • What tangible benefits have their expertise brought to people with kidney diseases and/or other medical conditions?
    • Has the candidate had a strong record of educational scholars?

Mentorship:

  • Have they played an important role in training or mentoring the medical educators of the future?

The Pioneer Awards honor the ‘unsung heroes’ of nephrology: doctors who have made extraordinary efforts to advance nephrology in a specific country or region. Without their dedication, nephrology would be far behind its current state in their home country.

Primary area:

  • Have they contributed significantly to kidney care in their home region, and how?

Clinical or research impact:

  • Has the candidate had a record of quality publications?
  • Have they made research contributions that improved the health of individuals affected by kidney disease or advanced nephrology practice? If so, how?
  • Have they made educational contributions that improved the health of individuals affected by kidney disease and/or other medical conditions or advanced medical practice? If so, how?
  • What tangible benefits have their expertise brought to people with kidney diseases and/or other medical conditions?

Mentorship:

  • Have they played an important role in training or mentoring kidney care professionals of the future? If so, how?

The Lillian Jean Kaplan Prize for PKD recognizes leading professionals or researchers developing research to advance the understanding of Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). The long-term goal of the Kaplan Prize is to increase the research that will lead to a treatment and cure for the millions of people who suffer from PKD.

Primary area:

  • How has the candidate’s seminal scientific work improved the knowledge and treatment of PKD?

Research impact:

  • Has the quality, quantity, and impact of the candidate’s research been truly exceptional, and why?
    • Has the candidate had a strong and sustained record of high-quality, high impact publications?
    • Have their research contributions improved the health of individuals affected by PKD?
    • Have their contributions led to fundamental changes in the PKD research field, or otherwise been seminal for PKD researchers?
    • How have their research contributions advanced nephrology practice?
    • What tangible benefits have their research brought to people with PKD?

Mentorship:

  • Have they played an important role in training or mentoring the kidney researchers of the future?
