Global Kidney Organizations Urge Governments to Prioritize Delivery of COVID-19 Vaccine to Dialysis Patients.

The presidents of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN), the European Renal Association-European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA), and the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) have urged the immediate prioritization of COVID-vaccine distribution to people undergoing dialysis treatment in dialysis units worldwide.

Kidney failure patients cannot live without dialysis and are more at risk of contracting the SARS-CoV-2 infection than the general population due to unavoidable travel and social contact to access treatment.

A recent editorial published in Kidney International states, “vaccinating dialysis patients may have the highest relative impact of all health care groups, through reducing infections, mortality, and burden on the health care system.”

The ASN, ERA-EDTA, and ISN stand ready to support efforts to act on the urgent need to prioritize COVID-19 vaccinations for dialysis patients and frontline staff in dialysis units.
