For the Young and Young at Heart – Join the YNC for Dynamic Exchanges at WCN’24 in Buenos Aires

By YNC Committee member Zdenka Hrušková

Building on the success of last year’s in-person Word Congress (WCN) in Bangkok, the ISN Young Nephrologists Committee (YNC) is pleased to release an exciting new program for WCN’24 in Buenos Aires that incorporates proven, well-received activities while introducing novel sessions to provide even more opportunities for learning and networking.

We are looking forward to meeting again in person to exchange and grow together – and we are expecting a great turnout. We hope to build connections with both seasoned and new delegates. Anticipating the chance to reconnect with familiar faces, some of whom we’ve only ever met virtually, and meet new ones adds to our excitement for the upcoming event.

We have had the opportunity to collaborate with several young nephrologists from WCN’24 co-hosts, the Argentinian Society of Nephrology (SAN) and the Latin-American Society of Nephrology (SLANH) and Hypertension. With their assistance, our scientific session this year will focus on acute kidney injury and critical care nephrology and involve young speakers and moderators from the region. We are also collaborating with doctors and nurses in South America to develop the eagerly anticipated “Spotlight Sessions” as a platform for engaging discussions on many relevant topics.

So, what has the YNC planned for WCN’24?

Main program session

AKI and Critical Care Nephrology in Latin America
Sunday, April 14, 9-10.30 a.m., Hall C3 (all times cited are local: convert to your time zone here)

This YNC session, held within the main scientific program, will discuss salient topics in AKI and critical care nephrology, emphasizing challenges in low-resource settings and the impact of young nephrologists in the development and sustainability of critical care nephrology programs.

The session will feature a roundtable discussion on the challenges of developing and implementing sustainable critical care nephrology programs in Latin America.

Spotlight Stage session

“Challenges Pertaining to Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) Practice in Latin America: A Nurse-Doctor Dialogue”
Sunday, April 14,
6.15-7 p.m., Spotlight Stage

Join this discussion between doctors and nurses about the obstacles of practicing peritoneal dialysis in different areas of Latin America and how doctors and kidney health professionals can work together to improve the well-being of people on peritoneal dialysis in the region.

The participants in the interactive roundtable discussion will be young nurses and doctors, and those with more experience, from the Latin American region, ready to take questions from the audience.

Spotlight Stage session

“The ISN Helps You to Create and Strengthen the Young Nephrologists Committee in Your Country: Discover the New YNC Toolkit”
Monday, April 15
, 3:15 – 3:45 p.m., Spotlight Stage

Young nephrologists’ committees and groups already exist in many regional and national societies worldwide, helping them to launch their careers and build professional networks.

However, in areas where such groups do not yet exist, motivated young nephrologists may not have enough experience or support to start these groups.

We at the YNC believe everyone can drive for change and create their own young nephrologist committee or society. That’s why we’ve created a toolkit that will be presented in this session.

Whether you are a member of a regional society or not, feel free to join this session. Participate in a roundtable discussion on the toolkit with YN committee members and explore how such groups can influence the future of nephrology. Your participation is valued and encouraged.

Spotlight Stage session

The Young Nephrologists’ quiz-a-thon is back!
Monday, April 15,
4-4:45 p.m., Spotlight Stage

Following the success of last year’s edition, five teams representing different ISN world regions will compete in a quiz to foster engagement and connection between ISN members in an interactive and fun way. Be sure to join us for what promises to be a social highlight of the congress.

Can the African team retain their first-place position in the quiz-a-thon in Buenos Aires?
