Elevating patient experience within clinical care: Rita Charon to present plenary session on narrative medicine at WCN’27

Behind every diagnosis is a patient with their own experiences, priorities, and story. Narrative medicine asks clinicians to pay closer attention to these stories and how they can inform medical decision-making.
Rita Charon (USA), a professor of medicine, literary scholar, and co-founder of the field of narrative medicine, will present “Narrative Power for Patients and Clinicians: Partners in Health and Care” at WCN’27.

By practicing what Professor Charon calls “radical listening” and incorporating techniques from literary analysis, such as close reading and interpretation, narrative medicine gives practitioners tools to discern better what their patients are communicating.
This approach is especially relevant in kidney care, where many conditions are long-term, complex, and disruptive to everyday life. By absorbing and analyzing how patients describe these experiences, narrative medicine can strengthen empathy and connection between clinician and patient and support more effective treatment.
Professor Charon’s session is one of several WCN’27 plenaries bringing perspectives from across and beyond kidney care to explore the clinical, scientific, and human dimensions of caring for people with kidney disease.
