Setting the stage for free medical care in developing countries

Members of our unit at Westmead Hospital, Sydney (Australia) have just returned from a four day-day visit to the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) in Karachi (India).

SIUT was founded and is led by Adibul Hasan Rizvi (Adib) who received the 2015 South Asia ISN Pioneer Award. Adib is an icon in his country. While we were there a large new public hospital was named after him.

Back in the 1970s, Adib conceived the idea of a hospital that provides free medical care to all. SIUT has been in existence for 25 years.  The standard of medical care achieved in his institute is world class, and of the highest ethical standard.

It truly does provide free medical care, based around the generosity of Adib and his staff and unsolicited donations from patients and support from benefactors and the government who recognise the value of this model.  Similar models in other developing nations would go a long way to solving the huge challenges facing global nephrology.
