ISN World Congress of Nephrology 2017 stresses Mexico’s battle with diabetes and kidney disease
ISN organized a press congress in Mexico City on January 12, 2017 to announce the theme of the upcoming ISN World Congress of Nephrology, taking place from April 21 to 25, 2017 in Mexico City.
The increasingly damaging effect of diabetes and kidney disease across Latin America, and particularly Mexico, will lead plenary sessions and forum debate at the ISN World Congress of Nephrology (WCN), organized by the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and hosted by the Latin American Society of Nephrology (SLANH).
In Mexico, diabetes is the cause of at least one third of deaths between the age of 35 and 74, with excess mortality mainly attributed to renal disease, vascular disease, infection, and acute diabetic crises. Figures are set to increase further due to rising obesity within the Mexican population and insufficient control of blood glucose, blood pressure as well as cholesterol levels.
The ISN Global Kidney Policy Forum on April 21, 2017 will welcome Secretario de Salud de Mexico, Dr. José Narro Robles, The Lancet Editor-in-Chief Richard Horton and ISN President Adeera Levin.
They will seek to address the burden of kidney disease in the Americas and share prevention strategies to improve how the disease is managed at a regional and global level.
Furthermore, a session on April 24, 2017 will report on the outcome of the ISN Global Kidney Health Atlas, a survey mapping existing resources, structures and organizations available globally to patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and acute kidney injury (AKI).
‘This is the first time that an international nephrology congress will highlight the issue of diabetic kidney disease,’ explains Ricardo Correa-Rotter, chairman of the Local Organizing Committee and representing SLANH from the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán in Mexico.
The overall scientific program extensively explores the scientific and clinical aspects of diabetes and kidney disease throughout the lifespan and the spectrum of kidney disease.
