Reversal of advanced diabetic kidney disease in mice achieved with a monoclonal anti-VEGFR1 antibody

Diabetic kidney disease is a major cause of kidney failure, and new treatment approaches are needed.

In this study, researchers tested various strategies to target the VEGF-A pathway in mouse models of diabetic kidney disease and chronic kidney disease.

They found that blocking VEGFR1 improved kidney function, reduced signs of kidney damage, and increased survival, suggesting it may offer a promising new direction for slowing or reversing disease progression.

Acute kidney injury and mortality in children hospitalized with malnutrition

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication in hospitalized children, but it can be harder to identify accurately in children with acute malnutrition because their baseline creatinine levels may be low.

This study of 185 Ugandan children hospitalized with acute malnutrition examined how different AKI definitions affected risk assessment and evaluated the ISN STOP AKI risk score in this specific population. The results showed that using a minimum creatinine threshold of 0.4 mg/dl helped identify children with AKI who were at higher risk of death.

The findings suggest that AKI identification and risk assessment approaches may need to be adapted for children with acute malnutrition.
