Virtual Learning Sessions Host ISN Educational Ambassador Training Program in Egypt

The ISN Educational Ambassador (EA) Program endorsed a critical care training program in Egypt between December 31, 2020, and January 9, 2021, at Talkha Central Hospital, Dakahlia, Egypt.

International speakers from the USA, UK, and UAE were invited to share in the educational activities, and professors in renal pathology from the nearby urology and nephrology center at Mansoura University Hospital also participated. The organizers engaged the Egyptian ministry of health to highlight the scale of the initiative and facilitate administrative needs to support the center’s nephrology service.

More than 180 doctors and nurses attended overall from a range of locations, including Talkha, Belkas, Sherbin, Nabarouh, Mansoura, Elmaasarh, and Al Ahmadiah. Eighty percent of the training took place virtually, with hands-on training in renal biopsy and insertion of hemodialysis catheters taking place in small groups in an operating theater with regulation sterilization, surgical masks, and PPE.

Renal nurses were trained on infection control, handling renal failure patients, renal nutrition, and avoiding common errors in renal units. An online evaluation took place at the end of the course.

All nephrologists in the Talkha central hospital and surrounding satellite units can now perform renal ultrasound and biopsies, insert perm catheters, and manage acute and chronic nephrology patients.

ISN Educational Ambassadors, Dr. Ahmed Akl, Associate Professor, Fakeeh College of Medical Sciences and Consultant of Nephrology and Transplantation, Urology and Nephrology center, Mansoura University, Egypt, and Dr. Osama El Shahate, Consultant of Nephrology, Mansoura medical syndicate, both contributed to the training.

Dr. Akl comments, “The ISN EAP is a very helpful initiative to encourage young residents to take up nephrology and help nephrology fellows to update their practice with outstanding knowledge at their place of work with improvement of the general environment in the hospital for good nephrology practice.”

Dr. Hamed Ezzat El-Eraky, Nephrology Specialist at Mansoura International Hospital, states, “The ISN-EAP Program is a successful approach to teach nephrologists in rural areas, enabling them to receive knowledge and skills in their own center and improve patient care in the region.”

A further course is planned within the next year to reinforce and update the training.
