Building Skills, Saving Lives: ISN Educational Ambassadors Program Supports Expansion of POCUS Training for Kidney Care in Pakistan
In December, ISN Educational Ambassador Saeed Ahmed, consultant nephrologist at the Institution South Tyneside Sunderland Foundation Trust (STSFT) in the UK, led the hands-on component of a point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) course at the Indus Hospitals and Health Network in Karachi, Pakistan. The training was preceded by online sessions that began in September.

This is the second POCUS training Dr. Ahmed has delivered in Pakistan with support from the ISN Educational Ambassadors Program (EAP). The course addresses gaps in diagnostic and interventional nephrology by building capacity in POCUS, which, according to Javeria Chughtai, a consultant at the Indus Hospital and EA host center liaison for this training, is uncommon in Pakistan.

The training provided participants with fundamental knowledge of point-of-care ultrasound, practical skills for its clinical application, and the ability to analyse and interpret findings in various clinical settings. The hybrid format, blending online learning with mentor feedback and in-person training, ensured tailored, hands-on support to meet students’ individual needs.
In-person training was tailored to individual needs
According to Dr. Ahmed, the impact of the training was “Major in the immediate and long term.” Dr. Chughtai added, “There is growing interest among physicians and nurses in learning and using POCUS in their daily practice.”
