ISN Journal summaries on CONVINCE trial findings and kidney transplantation in Iran

A health economic evaluation of the multinational, randomized controlled CONVINCE trial: cost-utility of high-dose online hemodiafiltration compared to high-flux hemodialysis

Patients with kidney failure often receive either high-flux hemodialysis (HD) or high-dose hemodiafiltration (HDF). Previous research shows HDF may lower the risk of death compared to HD.

This study looked at whether the potential health benefits of HDF are worth the additional cost. While HDF costs slightly more per session, the findings demonstrate that patients receiving HDF experienced greater quality-adjusted life years compared with those on HD.

The findings suggest HDF may be a cost-effective option, but local costs and healthcare priorities should be considered before implementing changes in treatment strategy.

20 years Iranian experience of organ donation: shifting from compensated living unrelated kidney transplantation

Iran has shifted from compensated living unrelated kidney transplantation to predominantly deceased-donor transplants, now 72% of cases.

Key steps included a 1989 religious decree, 2000 legislation, and awareness efforts by the Iranian Society of Organ Donation.

Improved procurement and transparency have boosted donations, yet organ shortages remain, with 10,000 transplants needed annually.
