Vascular access symposium and workshop in Kuwait

The Kuwait Nephrology Association organized a two-day symposium and workshop on vascular access in Kuwait. The workshop was planned as an initiative by ISN’s Middle East Regional Board and the Interventional Nephrology Committee to improve dialysis access care in the Middle East.

The key objective of the meeting was to start a formal dialogue between nephrologists, vascular access surgeons and interventional radiologists and identify the shortcomings to provide optimal care to patients needing dialysis in Kuwait.

Ali AlSahow served as meeting Chair with passionate support from Mona Alrukhaimi, Chair of the Middle East Regional Board. The meeting was well attended by nephrologists, vascular surgeons, vascular access nurses and interventional radiologists.

ISN Interventional Nephrology Committee Members Tushar Vachharajani (Chair), Arif Asif (USA), Naveed Haq (Saudi Arabia) along with other international and regional faculty  including Anil Agarwal (USA), Collin Forman (UK) and Mahmood AL Hajeri (Oman) participated as speakers and discussed key issues relevant to access care in Kuwait and the Middle East.

The hands-on workshop included simulation stations for cuffed tunneled catheter placement with ultrasound guidance, kidney biopsy, and the physical examination of dialysis vascular access. The meeting served as a first step to start a dialogue and build a successful collaborative team approach for improving dialysis-related quality and outcome of care.

Mona congratulated the organizers for initiating the collaboration between the Middle East Regional Board and ISN Interventional Nephrology Committee and proposed a future meeting this year in Bahrain.
