Awards for the pioneers of nephrology
To honor the “unsung heroes” of nephrology, ISN has created the Pioneer Awards that go to doctors who have achieved a major breakthrough to advance nephrology in a specific country or region.
Without their dedication, nephrology would have been far behind its current state in their country and region. Congratulations to the following nephrologists who will be honored this year.

Africa
Prof. Hasan Abu-Aisha (Sudan) founded the first program for continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) in Sudan in 2005 and constructed the first Renal Unit in Sudan.
Central and Eastern Europe
Prof. Ayla San (Turkey), established the nephrology division at the Erzurum Ataturk University and started the first dialysis in Erzurum in 1975. This was the first hemodialysis center in East Anatolia.
Latin America
Nestor Schor, MD, PhD (Brazil), was chief of the renal division and head of the department of medicine as well as Dean of the graduate and research programs at the Universidade Federal de São Paulo. He was President of the Brazilian Society of Nephrology and Vice-President of the Latin American Society of Nephrology.
Middle East
Dr. Riyad Said (Jordan), is founder and Past President of the Jordan Society of Nephrology. For 20 years he was head of the nephrology division at the Jordan Hospital in Amman. Today, he is director of the medical education and training at the Jordan Hospital & Medical Center, Amman.
NIS and Russia
Dr. Assiya Kanatbayeva (Kazakhstan), has been working hard since the early 1970s to develop the care for patients with kidney diseases in Kazakhstan. As chief of the nephrology department of the Kazakh National Medical University she is teacher and advisor for almost all nephrologists in her country.
North and East Asia
Prof. Wu-Chang Yang (Taiwan), has guided Taiwan into a new era of CKD prevention and treatment at the beginning of the new millenium. He initiated a dialysis registration system as the basis for epidemiological studies and he improved the quality of dialysis care through a delicate evaluation system.
Oceania and South East Asia
Prof. Wiguno Prodjosudjadi (Indonesia), belongs to those personalities who have developed nephrology in Indonesia. He played an important role in the care of kidney patients, the research in the field of nephrology and in the education.
South Asia
Dr. Harun Ur Rashid (Bangladesh), was responsible for developing education, research and a community network for the treatment of kidney disease at the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research, Dhaka, and thus is a true pioneer of nephrology in Bangladesh.
