Regional Training Centers: What Can Be Achieved?
Since 2010, the Department of Nephrology of the Groote Schuur Hospital, University of Cape Town in South Africa, an ISN Regional Training Center from 2017 to 2019, has trained 15 African doctors in clinical nephrology, pediatric nephrology, and renal transplantation through ISN Educational Ambassadors and Fellowship granting programs.

Supporting institution in the Sister Renal Centers Program Ethiopia-India-Canada trio, and ISN Regional Training Center from 2017 to 2019, St. John’s Medical College in India helped establish a pediatric nephrology service at the emerging center, Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH) in Ethiopia, providing training and materials. Children who receive transplants abroad can now obtain post-operative care at TASH, and the number of pediatric nephrologists in Ethiopia has increased to five.

“The bright faces we see when our children beat death and come back for [a] follow-up is a reason to push through every day against all the limitations in the country.”
Bezaye Abebe, liaison officer at the emerging center, Ethiopia
