- Regional differences in access to kidney care and their consequences;
- Insights of sub-populations at high risk of experiencing inequalities; and,
- An understanding of potential solutions to these inequalities
The global burden of CKD is growing, with the rate of people needing dialysis having increased more than 40% since 1990. Kidney diseases have risen from the world’s 17th leading cause of death in 1990 to the 10th in 2019. Access to kidney healthcare is also far from universal, even within countries where resources are more readily available, with outcomes for sub-populations varying as widely as access to treatment itself. Solutions to the challenge of access to kidney health care for all include greater education, investment, innovation and adaption but all require a greater understanding of the challenges and their causes.
