For ISN IN scholar Odalina Marrero, the scholarship addressed pressing needs in her home country, the Dominican Republic, where kidney care is advancing but access to specialized procedures remains limited amid a rising burden of chronic kidney disease.
Dr. Marrero undertook her scholarship in Ecuador with defined learning objectives. She comments, “The interventional nephrology program far exceeded my expectations in several areas. The training in POCUS and VEXUS was excellent — very well-structured, with plenty of supervised, hands-on practice. The same was true for catheter placement and vascular access procedures, where I truly gained practical skills that I now feel confident performing.”
Looking back on the experience, she outlines the ways it has strengthened her clinical and academic activities. “My ISN IN Scholarship had a direct and meaningful impact on the quality of care I can now offer in my region. [The training] has allowed me to improve diagnostic accuracy and procedural safety for my patients. I have also begun training colleagues and residents, sharing the techniques and protocols I learned during the program. Additionally, my exposure to research methodologies has encouraged me to initiate local projects focused on vascular access outcomes and nephroprotection strategies, helping to build a more evidence-driven approach within my institution.”
She adds, “I would highly recommend the ISN IN Scholarship to any nephrology professional seeking to advance their clinical, procedural, and academic skills. The program provides excellent mentorship, high-quality hands-on training, and exposure to innovative approaches in kidney care. It is a transformative experience that not only strengthens individual competency but also contributes to elevating the standards of nephrology practice within one’s home region.”
