Interview with the ISN Community Film Event 2021 Best Film Winners

The ISN Community Film Event presents stories from around the world highlighting the impact of kidney diseases. Shortlisted films reach a global audience at their world congress screening, where the audience votes for the “Best Film Award.”

In 2020, Rafael de Souza Piné and Roberto Pecoits-Filho, Brazil, were selected as finalists with their film “The One Inside” and received the ISN Community Best Film award for their entry “Life Beyond the Transplant” in 2021.

Rafael de Souza Piné talked to the ISN about what had motivated his team to submit a film and the award’s impact.

The team wanted to bring a behind-the-scenes story into the public eye. Both films document successful kidney transplants that took place within the same week at the Santa Casa de Curitiba Hospital. The ISN Community Film Event provided an ideal opportunity to highlight the patient experience of kidney transplant and increase the visibility of this milestone in the center’s history. Rafael de Souza Piné commented, “Initiatives like the ISN Community Film Event expand the possibilities of dissemination to society as a whole.”

They felt it was particularly important to show how health care teams complement the gaps that health systems do not fully address by going beyond clinical intervention to generate individualized and compassionate care that transcends cultural and socioeconomic barriers.

Receiving the Best Film Award 2021 was a morale-boosting reward for employees and patients at the health center. It raised the profile of the medical team in the local media, opening an opportunity for debate on kidney disease and the importance of organ donation and adequate resource allocation.

Rafael de Souza Piné added,  “I would like to congratulate the ISN for the Community Film Event initiative – we feel honored that our films were selected in the last two events. We hope the event continues to help raise awareness of kidney diseases.”

Inspired to submit a film? The deadline is December 8, 2021.
